Three Gippsland Grammar students have put in great performaces at the 2021 Equine Victorian Interschool State Championships.
Charlee Latham qualified for the Australian Interschool Championships after a great performance at the Victorian Championships at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre in April.
With her pony Merivale Park Giorgio, the Year 6 Bairnsdale Campus student came runner-up in the State Interschool Primary Show Horse Champion. This is the second year in a row she has qualified for the interschool national event.
Charlee also competed on her new pony, Storeybook Coco Chanel, and placed fifth from a huge class of ponies in the Primary Show Hunter Championships. She was half a point off qualifying this pony for the Victorian Team but is the first reserve should someone else pull out.
Fellow Gippsland Grammar Year 6 student Xanthe Wade, from St Anne’s Campus, also enjoyed great overall performances at the State titles and was last week recognised by Equestrian Victoria.
She was awarded the Champion Primary School Rider and awarded the Nan McArthur Trophy by Chief Executive Officer Matthew Brown.
Mr Brown visited Xanthe at her School to make the presentation praising her efforts over the five days of competition.
He explained that students from across the state came together to compete in a wide range of Olympic and non-Olympic disciplines including dressage, jumping, combined training, show horse and novelties.
He suggested young riders, like Charlee and Xanthe, with determination could easily be included in a pathway to represent Australia at the 2032 Olympic games. But for now, the girls are aiming for the interschool nationals in September.
Ella O’Doherty, Year 10, is also a member of Gippsland Grammar’s Equestrian team. She achieved runner up State Interschools Secondary Show Horse Champion and has qualified for the nationals.
